It's been another busy month at court. A total of 16 criminals have been locked up after appearing at Hull Crown Court in October. They include evil paedophile David Edens who was jailed for 28 years for the sickening abuse he carried out on four young boys and Bridlington thug Simon Butcher who stole his partner's dog after he headbutted her. Here is a round-up of the criminals jailed in October. Jimmy Bennett Jimmy Bennett has been sentenced to seven years in prison(Image: Humberside Police)Bennett, 22, slashed an 18-year-old's face with a kitchen knife. In April this year a woman took her son to pick up a takeaway from Hull Road in Hessle and the 18-year-old victim had also been in the same row of shops. As the woman went to pick up her takeaway she was subjected to offensive sexual comments from an unidentified man. Most Read {{#articles}}{{title}}{{/articles}}She told Bennett, her partner, about this when she got home and enraged by what he had heard Bennett went into the kitchen, armed himself with a large knife and left home. Despite being unaware of who had made the comments he went to the shops and approached three people - one of them his victim. He gave chase and the victim tripped and fell over. While he laid there Bennett slashed at his face with the knife. Evidence during the trial suggested Bennett lashed out at the victim at least three times with the knife. James Cass James Cass has been jailed for two shocking assaults on his ex-partnerCruel Cass, 23, beat his partner so bad he thought he had killed her. Emma Lorraine, 22, bravely showed pictures of the assault Cass subjected her to over the course of an hour in front of her one-year-old daughter. Don’t miss {{#articles}}{{title}}{{/articles}}After being told in a text message Cass would "kill her" she was then set upon by him in her bedroom. Cass strangled, punched and kicked Emma before ringing the police. He was handed an eight-month sentence in October. Read the full story here. Ashley Jordan Ashley Jordan(Image: Humberside Police)Small-fry drug dealer Jordan, 28, was handed three years in prison after he was caught with over £200 worth of crack cocaine. He was spotted by plain-clothed officers cycling along Ellerburn Avenue before he was seen making a "close quarters hand-to-hand exchange." Realising he was being followed, Jordan jettisoned small packages from his pocket which one of the officers was able to retrieve. He was caught 50 yards later. In total, 12 wraps of crack cocaine was recovered, weight around 1.82g and of 68 per cent purity. The estimated street value was £240. Jordan was also found in possession of £90.60 and a mobile phone which contained advertisements to buyers. Read the full story here. Lionel Munt Lionel Munt has been jailedA Hull family were forced to sleep in their car after Munt, 44, verbally and racially abused them when they lived in the flat above him. He banged on the family's door, woke them up in the early hours of the morning by playing loud music and shouted horrific racial slurs at them. The woman, who lived in the flat at Great Thornton Street with her husband and two young children, said she was too scared to take her children to nursery in case she bumped into Munt. Recorder Gavin Doig sentenced Munt to nine months and two weeks in prison for two counts of racially aggravated harassment and breach of a suspended sentence. Read the full story here. Brian Thompson Brian Thompson has been jailed(Image: Humberside Police)Thompson, 59, of Somerscales Street, off Beverley Road failed to tell anyone his friend had died and stole from him as his body lay undetected. A trial at Hull Crown Court in October heard that Adrian Carter was found dead at his home on May 28, 2019. He had passed away in non-suspicious circumstances 11 days before on May 17. Despite finding his body, his "friend" Thompson did not tell anyone and, using a key entrusted to him by Adrian, stole his possessions including his cockatiel. After Adrian's body was found, Thompson even paid a sickening tribute to Hull Live. He was jailed for five years. Read the full story here. Jonathan Clarke The scene of the crashAfter a night of drinking Clarke drove from east to west Hull to take his friends home. Although the drive there passed with no event, it was on his way home when Clarke, driving his friend's stolen car on his own, mounted the pavement on Spring Bank West and collided with a cyclist. He fled the scene and his 60-year-old victim had to undergo life-saving brain surgery. Clarke told his friend, who was still asleep at his house: "I've done some damage to your car." He was eventually found and arrested. Hull Court News Dad stamped on girlfriend's head Child left brain damaged Couple found guilty of child sex crimes Hull dad strangled wife she dropped babyBut it was only when officers seized the car and his T-shirt that they found his fingerprints on the inside mirror and 100 fragments of glass in his shirt. His victim told Hull Crown Court in a statement: "I am lucky to be alive." Sentencing him, Recorder Doig told Clarke: "It was fortunate for you that the man was saved otherwise you would be facing sentence for death by dangerous driving. You were thinking only of yourself when you drove home." He handed Clarke three years and four months in prison. Read the full story here. Simon Butcher Simon Butcher has been jailedBridlington thug Butcher stole his partner's dog after headbutting her in a row over his drinking. He had been shopping for his now ex-partner on September 4 this year and went to drop it off at her house. Butcher was "intoxicated" and in a row over his drinking he grabbed his partner by the throat up against a cabinet and headbutted her before stealing her dog and mobile phone. He was arrested the next day and in an attempt to evade justice, struggled against officers, pushing one so hard he dislocated his shoulder. He was jailed for 14 months for assault, theft and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. Read the full story here. David Javan David Javan"Monster" Javan was jailed for 12 years in October after his sickening crimes against two underage girls were reported years later. Javan, who was in a position of trust, abused the two girls over a ten-year period. He groomed his victims and bribed them with money and trips to Hull Fair in exchange for sexual activity. He even blackmailed one of his victims, telling her if she didn't let him touch her he would turn his attention to younger family members. The latest crime statistics for your areaGrimsby Crown Court heard Javan tried to normalise his behaviour by telling one of his victims as he forced her into sexual activity with him that he was "teaching her a skill." It was later revealed that Javan had been a foster carer after the abuse had taken place - it is understood none of the children in his care were subjected to abuse from Javan. Richard Ramsey Richard Ramsey has been jailedEvil delivery driver Ramsey lured a vulnerable woman into his van before raping her in a deserted country lane. He offered the woman a lift as she was walking to Driffield on November 25 last year. Instead of taking her there however, Ramsey pulled into the country lane near Nafferton. Under the ruse of asking her to help organise parcels in the back of his van, Ramsey raped the woman. The shocking attack left the vulnerable woman with severe psychological issues and flashbacks. Join the group here. Ramsey was found guilty of two counts of rape following a four-day trial at Hull Crown Court. He was jailed for 12 years by Judge Mark Bury who told him: "This is very serious offending. This is exactly the sort of case that causes members of the public, particularly women, anxiety. "When reading about this, they will wonder if it is safe for them to walk along a road, even in the day time. Those who commit these kind of offences will be punished when they are caught." Read the full story here. Jack Walker Jack WalkerWalker, 25, was sentenced alongside his ex-partner Sophie Nutter after they were caught with cocaine in their Corsa. The former couple would ferry cocaine and heroin across Hull and East Yorkshire and were eventually stopped by Humberside Police officers in March last year. Walker handed over a large amount of cocaine and heroin to Nutter to hide while he spoke to police. They were arrested and it was found Nutter had concealed the drugs down the back of her underwear. Walker was jailed for two years and eight months and Nutter was handed a six-month sentence suspended for two years. Later it was revealed that a closure order had been issued on Nutter's house after she caused misery to her neighbours in Beverley with her drug-dealing and late-night parties. Read the full story here. Simon Flinders Simon FlindersGym-owner Flinders was jailed in October after he was caught with over £38,000 worth of anabolic steroids. Police executed warrants at the Metro Gym in Hull and Flinder's home in October last year. When officers asked if there were any drugs on site at the gym, Flinders pointed to a cabinet in the gym's kitchen area where a drawer of anabolic steroids with packages labelled with client's names were found. Police also found boxes filled with syringes, a large number of tablets, an amount of cash, 88 ml vials of steroids as well as 1,700 tablets. At his home and in his car 300 vials and over 9,000 tablets were found. It was estimated that the total value of steroids found had an estimated street value of £38,286. He was jailed for a year. Read the full story here. David Edens David Edens has been jailed for 28 yearsEvil Edens was jailed in October for 28 years after victims of his horrific, historic abuse came forward. Edens groomed and abused four victims - his youngest just six years old - over a ten-year period. He threatened his victims, telling them that if they reported what he was doing to them they would get into trouble. He rewarded them with money and trips out. One of the boys, now a grown man, has tried to take his own life because of the abuse he suffered. Edens was found guilty of nine counts of indecency with a child, nine of indecent assault of a child, one count of rape and one count of rape on no less then three occasions by a jury at Hull Crown Court. Judge John Thackray told him the lives of his victims had been blighted by what he had done to them. Read the full story here. Marrow would put coins into the hands of his victims to keep them quiet. He would "play fight" with his victims and grab their breasts while doing so. He would also groom his victims by giving them cigarettes and money. All three of his victims, now adults, gave evidence during a trial where the jury found him guilty of 16 out of 18 sickening offences. Recorder Sandiford told him: "You are a self-centered, selfish, wicked man." Read the full story here. Jack Lees Jack Lees was sentenced to 30 months in prison(Image: Humberside Police)Lees, 24, was jailed for killing his friend Ciaran Shannon in a motorbike crash in March last year. The pair had had a couple of drinks in the town centre that night - Lees admitted he drank up to five bottles of Stella and had taken a quantity of cocaine. Despite this, Mr Shannon was seen getting on the back of Lees' bike without a helmet or the rear passenger pegs installed. The bike was seen veering off the B1230 road and out of sight, where it mounted the kerb and struck a fence. Mr Shannon was found unresponsive on the ground. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead shortly after. Mr Shannon's family said they hoped Lees would go on to live a "happy and successful life" and said they do not place all of the blame on him. Judge David Tremberg sentenced Lees to 30 months imprisonment. Read the full story here. Daniel Howlett Daniel HowlettBaby-faced thug was jailed after he smashed a glass into a man's face in a case of mistaken identity. Howlett had been drinking for 12 hours before the attack where he hit the former bouncer during a pub brawl. The man had tried to intervene to calm the situation but was "blindsided" and hit to the left of his eye. He went to the bathroom and that was when he realised he was bleeding quite badly near his left eye. He could later be seen smashing the glass into the man's face. Judge David Tremberg told Howlett he was "very fortunate" his actions did not cause more injury as he jailed him for a year. Read the full story here. James Shipley HMP HumberHMP Humber inmate Shipley has had his stay extended after he smashed a coffee mug over the head of a prison officer, causing lacerations to his face. Shipley had become agitated when he discovered his cell door had been left unlocked, leaving it open for anyone to walk into it. Show morePrison officers noticed him with a ceramic coffee mug in his hand, despite the fact he was supposed to be working. He was told to return to his cell but when he realised it was unlocked he attacked. Show moreShipley then jumped over the railing onto the netting of the first floor before eventually returning to his cell where he was locked in. The prison officer as taken to Hull Royal Infirmary for treatment. Shipley was told he will spend a further three years in prison. Read the full story here. |
